As an artist, there are moments that make you pause and reflect on how your work can make a lasting impact on someone’s life. One of those moments happened when I was approached with a unique opportunity to paint a portrait of Caitlin Foord, the talented forward for Arsenal Women’s Team, in celebration of her 150th match with the club.
For me, this project was more than just about the art. It was about the connection to my family, specifically my sisters, who are huge Arsenal fans—and more than that, they're absolutely obsessed with Caitlin Foord. To know that my art could be part of such a special moment for someone they admire so much was truly a dream come true.
The Inspiration Behind the Portrait
The request came as a surprise, and I was both honoured and excited. Caitlin’s milestone of 150 matches with Arsenal was such an achievement, and to be part of celebrating her career felt incredible. My sisters, who follow Arsenal’s journey closely, are always talking about Caitlin’s skill on the field and her presence in the team, so they were beyond thrilled when I was given the chance to create this portrait for her.
To capture Caitlin’s essence in the portrait, I made sure to emphasize her strength, determination, and the fierce passion she brings to every game. I poured a lot of personal connection into the piece—after all, it was not just a portrait of a football player, but a tribute to someone who inspires my sisters and so many others.
The Artistic Process
When I started working on the portrait, I wanted to make sure every detail reflected Caitlin's personality. I focused on her expression, trying to capture the intensity and focus she shows on the pitch. Her body language needed to convey that powerful combination of grace and strength that defines her as a player.
I used reference photos from key moments in her career, mixing them to get the right stance and energy. I wanted to make sure the portrait felt authentic, so I spent a lot of time paying attention to the small details—like her jersey, her hair, and the intensity in her eyes.
It was a process that took time and patience, but I loved every moment of it. The hardest part was keeping the surprise under wraps, especially with my sisters eagerly waiting for any update!
The Big Reveal
The day of the reveal was unforgettable. Caitlin was presented with the portrait in celebration of her 150th match, and the look on her face was priceless. Knowing that my work was part of such a significant moment for her and for the Arsenal Women’s Team was truly special.
For my sisters, it was even more amazing. They couldn’t believe it when they saw Caitlin with the portrait, knowing that the art they had been hearing about for weeks was now in her hands. It was a beautiful reminder of how art has the power to connect people, moments, and emotions in ways that go beyond just a canvas.
